The Empty Leg, and Why It Is Not a Plan

What it is

An aircraft that has to fly somewhere with nobody aboard: back to base after a trip, or out to meet the next one. That flight is happening and costing the operator money whether or not anybody is in it.

Selling those seats cheaply is better for the operator than flying empty, which is why the prices are genuinely low rather than a marketing device.

Why it cannot be planned around

Because the empty leg exists only because of the trip that created it, and that trip belongs to somebody else. If they move their dates, the empty leg moves. If they cancel, it disappears. If they add a stop, it changes shape.

None of that is anybody behaving badly. It is the definition of the thing.

The three conditions

Somebody who can genuinely accept all three is a good candidate for one, and almost nobody can:

1. The route is theirs, not yours. It goes where it was already going, at both ends.
2. The timing is theirs. Within a window that can move without warning.
3. It can vanish. With no compensation and no obligation on anybody, because nothing was ever committed.

It does not publish a list of them, because a list of empty legs on a broker's site is a list of things that may already be gone, and it is the oldest way of getting somebody to make contact about a trip that no longer exists.
